Screen vs Application
You can record either the entire screen, or just some application(s). We'll cover "screen" first, and then deal with "applications" right at the end.
Note: in Pro mode, you can also record individual apps (on any screen)
Screen
When you're in screen mode, you are always recording the screen, or perhaps some selected area from that screen. This is what we covered briefly in the first video.
Lets cover what's here:
Video
- Display: if you have muiltiple displays, this dropdown lets you choose which of those you are going to record. In simple mode you can record one display at one time.
- Show Cursor: if disabled, the mouse cursor is not shown. If enabled, it is.
- Canvas Size: the size of the video being generated. Normally follows the size of the screen, but you can change it here. Example: recording in retina. By default, the output size is in points. If you have a retina screen, you can get twice the clarity by recording in retina mode, so you could drop down canvas size, and double it.
- Selected Area: shows you the selected area of the screen being recorded.
- 1:1: A quick helper to set the canvas to be the size of the screen in pixels. This is a shortcut to dropping down the canvas size and "working it out". It is here for speed.
- Crop: Sets the area (rectangle on the screen) to be recorded
- Camera: I'm going to skip this for now, but provide a breif example below. We'll deal with this in detail after I've finished the overview.
Audio
- Record application audio: Enable this if you want to record all the audio from your mac. In V6 you don't need a special audio driver. Just enable this option, and you're done.
- Volume: you can set the volume for application audio separately to mic audio, if required
- Record microphone: If enabled, allows you to record a microphone as well as the application audio. The dropdown to the right lets you choose which input device is used for audio.
Output
- Type: HEVC/H264. Sets how the video that V6 produces is encoded. If you're unsure, leave it at HEVC, which is perfect for almost everything you ever want to do.
- MP4: The type of movie produced. Either mp4 or quicktime. Given that most people are producing for mac, windows or web, mp4 is now the default (its more portable).
- Scale: If you don't need the full resolution of the canvas, you can change that here. This lets you leave all your canvas/capture settings alone yet still produce a smaller movie if that is useful to you.
After Recording
- Choose...: Select where iShowU V6 saves its movies. By default this is <your home folder>/Movies/iShowU6
Below these settings is a brief summary of what iShowU will do.
Preview and Layout
New in V6 is a preview of what is going to be produced. You can click this to see what iShowU is going to record.
What you might not expect, is you can also move and adjust the elements of your recording!
Here's a common scenario: Changing camera position.
- Enable the camera
- Open up the preview, and resize it so its next to the app
- Now... I'll enable background removal. Notice how the preview updates
- Next I'll right click on the camera, and choose "size, 40%"
- Then I'll right click again, and choose "position, top right"
Neat huh?
Camera and background removal
Lets go back to camera.
In V6 you can remove the background - you saw me do that in the example before.
If you have multiple cameras, you can choose which of those is used, using the dropdown.
It's a good idea to check the preview if you do so, since cameras can have different frame sizes, and their positions within the composition might have changed.
Timer
To the right of the record button is the Timer.
This lets you automatically stop recording, at either some specified time, or after some specified duration.
To use it, click the Timer button.
Lets choose duration, and then enter 30m. To do this I enter 00:30
That's it!
You've now covered almost everything in the simple mode ui.
Applications
In Applications mode, iShowU will capture only the applications you specify.
This is useful if you want to have other apps open on your desktop, but not have them captured in the final movie.
Important: Only applications on the selected display can be recorded.
Click "Add Applications" to show those apps on the selected display. Choose as many as you would like. There's a search field at the top to make it easier to narrow down what you want.
Now click preview. Notice how only those applications selected are included in the output!
